Rays

Rays evolved from sharks, and are a flattened fish with no bones, like regular fish, but carilage instead. Some rays congregate in groups of thousands, others live alone.

Rays range in size from just a few inches across to 22 feet. There are 500 different kinds of rays, and they are all carnivores, eating fish, molluscs, crustaceans and worms.

If the shark population gets wiped out then the number of rays will increase, which will in turn affect the shellfish industry. Manta rays are now under threat as their gills are perceived, without any scientific basis, to reduce blood toxins after an illness.
