What is Shark Finning?

Shark finning is the cruel practise of cutting off the fins of the sharks, while they are still alive.  Its body is then thrown back into the ocean, writhing in pain, to sink and starve on the ocean floor.

Shark fin soup is a Chinese delicacy that has suddenly escalated in popularity.  It is made with a rich broth, cooked for a long time to concentrate the flavours.

The fin, which has very little flavour and needs to be soaked in vinegar to break it down into a gelatinous mass, is added for texture. Shark fin soup is expensive, costing upwards of £50 per bowl, so it is used often in celebrating weddings and birthdays, and is an effective way of showing your status in society.
